Attention Current HCS Freshman and Sophomores
Colgate is hosting a science and sports camp in July and Hamilton is invited! This "sleep-away" camp is open to four local school districts and to students from New York City! Read the letter below from Courtney Savage, Camp Co-Director, to learn more. Attached you will also find the 2012 application in addition to a list of science sessions offered to last year's participants. If you have any questions, you may contact Courtney using the information below.
Application deadline is March 21st!
Dear Student:
We are writing to invite upcoming 10th and 11th grade students (current 9th and 10th grade students) to attend a two-week residential Science and Sports Program at Colgate University from July 2-13th.
Students will be housed in Colgate University dorms, eat in the college cafeteria, utilize college athletic facilities and have access to the library, computer centers and outdoor education facilities. Students will be supervised and taught by high school teachers from participating schools, Colgate University student science researchers and athletes, and Colgate University professors.
Throughout the two week program, students will work in science laboratories conducting experiments with Colgate University professors and research students. In past years, students performed in-vitro fertilization of sea urchins, collected local plants to test their utility in killing bacteria, synthesized and analyzed colorful organic molecules, bred zebra fish and collected fossils in the local quarry. Students viewed three amazing three-dimensional digital presentations in Colgate University’s state of the Visualization Lab.
At the same time, students will be learning and practicing skills in soccer, basketball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, squash, and water polo. By exposing students to new athletic challenges, we hope to encourage fitness, build sportsmanship, a healthy competitive spirit, and to nurture a love of playing. Students will be camping, hiking, climbing and challenged to complete low-ropes courses, to build communication and teamwork skills.
Students will be selected for participation on the basis of their applications, essay and teacher recommendations, which must be received by March 21, 2012 for consideration. Letters of acceptance/waitlist will be sent by April 6, 2012, requesting a payment of $75/student total cost for the two-week program, which must be received by April 27, 2012 with completed permission slips, liability waiver and completed medical forms to reserve a spot for the summer of 2012.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns regarding applications and/or fees. We hope to see you at the Science and Sports Camp this summer!
Sincerely,
Courtney Savage
